We are proud to announce the results of our Dec 2017 Executive Board election. Madi Scott (sophomore, Chemistry) will serve as our President, and Oscar Galdamez (freshman, Physics) will be our new Vice President. (The Secretary/Treasurer position remains vacant at this time, and Sacnistas interested in the position should email Prof. Prell.) We welcome our new leaders and look forward to a productive and exciting remainder of the school year for SACNAS!
Oregon needs great science teachers!
Innovative middle and high school teachers inspire broad student participation in science and technology career pathways, thus helping grow Oregon’s technology economy. They model what real science and engineering practices look and feel like in their classrooms. They also help students connect science content, experimentation and broader concepts to issues that are important to them.
For example, students in Bethel School District middle school classrooms build scale model wind turbines, test them, and compete to see who can generate the most renewable electrical power.
The University of Oregon’s new NSF Noyce ESPRIT program engages undergraduate science majors in science teaching and research; and financially supports their progress to teacher licensure and service in high need schools. We have over $35,000 in stipends and scholarships to award to each student who follows the ESPRIT pathway into science teaching.
We are holding monthly ESPRIT Innovative Science Teaching Explorations, where the ESPRIT pathway begins. If you are interested in undertaking cool science activities, meeting other students like yourself, and talking with dynamic Oregon science teachers, please come to an Exploration.
We seek your help in scheduling winter term 2018 ESPRIT Innovative Science Teaching Explorations. Please fill out the following Doodle Poll to let us know what days and times work best for you. Thanks!
Best wishes, the ESPRIT team
Jill Baxter (Education Studies), Dean Livelybrooks (Physics), Bryan Rebar and Julia McMorran (both STEM CORE)
We invite students of all backgrounds to join us for a study break with cookies and hot beverages in the Science Library (the “Price Science Commons”, upstairs next to the cafe) from 6:30-8:30 pm this Wednesday, December 6th. We hope to see you there!
