Hope to see you next Wednesday!
Oregon needs great K-12 science teachers !
On May 1, 2017, the NSF awarded $1.2M to the UO to build the ESPRIT research and scholarship program that engages UO science majors in careers as innovative science teachers. It starts with students (at any level) attending monthly Innovative Science Teaching Explorations, and then provides stipends ($3,040) to support students undertaking substantive science research experiences. Students who attend monthly Explorations and complete summer research projects are then eligible for scholarships ($32,000) as seniors and graduate students enrolled in the UOTeach program.
Want to learn more about these fantastic scholarship opportunities? Join the ESPRIT team for an Exploration of Teaching Science! Details are as follows below.
When: Tuesday, January 23rd, 4-6 PM
Where: Willamette 147
What: Find out how to apply for up to $35,000 in research support & tuition
Innovative middle and high school teachers inspire broad student participation in science and technology career pathways, thus helping grow Oregon’s technology economy. They model what real science and engineering practices look and feel like in their classrooms. They also help students connect science content, experimentation and broader concepts to issues that are important to them.
For example, students in Bethel School District middle school classrooms build scale model wind turbines, test them, and compete to see who can generate the most renewable electrical power.
We are holding monthly ESPRIT Innovative Science Teaching Explorations, where the ESPRIT pathway begins. If you are interested in undertaking cool science activities, meeting other students like yourself, and talking with dynamic Oregon science teachers, please come to an Exploration. Our next meeting will be January 23rd 4-6 PM in Willamette 147. See attached slide for schedule.
